What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing is a therapy developed in the late 1980’s that uses our brain’s intrinsic healing ability to decrease distressing emotions around a past event. Some past experiences continue to cause distress because the memories were not adequately processed. Using bilateral stimulation, we change the way that
memories are stored in the brain thus reducing/eliminating problematic symptoms.
If you think of our mind like a filing cabinet, at night when we sleep the rapid eye movement (REM sleep) files folders or experiences away in the filing cabinet. But if something particularly upsetting happens, your brain might think that the file needs to be left out so you can be ready if a similar situation occurs in the future. The problem is that the file is out in the open and other experiences get attached to it. So, you are reacting in emotional ways in situations where you don’t need to be.
What is an EMDR Intensive?
An EMDR Intensive is an accelerated and concentrated form of EMDR Therapy. We focus on one issue developing a personalized treatment plan consisting of multiple 3 hour sessions over a week or two. The amount of time the process takes is dependent on the client, but we plan on approximately 20 hours of therapy.
What are the benefits of an EMDR Intensive?
-
Rapid progress, fast relief - because we do a lot of work within one or two short weeks, clients see the results quickly.
-
Save time and money - intensives reduce the time spent in therapy because there is no need to settle in, review the week's events, or discuss a recent incident.
-
Personalized and focused - sessions are focused on EMDR and resolving the one complaint that the client and I agree upon. We develop a treatment plan together to identify the memories that need to be reprocessed around this specific situation or issue.
-
Deeper insights - having more time instead of the typical 50 minute session allows clients to go deeper and really explore issues.
-
Reduced disruption - because of the short time frame and sharp focus, there is little disruption with the EMDR process. That is usually not the case when doing EMDR in weekly therapy.
-
Flexibility - we can work around your days off to schedule sessions as well as do more than one session per day if you are able.
-
Supportive to weekly therapy - if you already have a therapist, an EMDR intensive can help remove a particular block that seems to be standing in the way of moving forward in your weekly therapy without leaving your current therapist.
Who is EMDR most useful for?
At first EMDR was used to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, but it has been shown to be an effective treatment for depression, anxiety, panic, phobias, loss, childhood abuse or neglect, and natural disasters. I also use it with clients who struggle with people-pleasing, self sabotage behaviors, problematic emotional reactions, fear of
criticism, perfectionism, and traumatic incidents.
Clients who engage in EMDR Intensives must be able to handle intense emotions and be willing to be vulnerable and communicate what is happening during the reprocessing.

If an EMDR Intensive is right for you, our first session will consist of
history taking, treatment planning, and reviewing ways to emotionally regulate.
Subsequent sessions will be dedicated to reprocessing. You’ll receive an EMDR
Intensive Workbook to guide you through the process and give you space to take notes
and record important information you would like to relay to your weekly therapist. We
will collaborate on the best way to schedule your sessions.

An amazing treatment for grief that consists of two 90 minute sessions on two consecutive days. Using a modified protocol of EMDR therapy, this treatment focuses on reducing sadness associated with grief. My clients who engage in IADC therapy report a significant reduction in sadness, guilt, and anger as well as a resolution of unsettled issues regarding the death of their loved one.
